Everything That Is Not the Shutter.
Hinges that sag, drawers that jam, handles that have gone loose and counters that have chipped or stained. These are the parts of a kitchen that wear out first and get replaced last, usually because nobody wants to take on a job this size. We do, and we do it without touching the carcass.
The parts you touch every day, replaced properly.
Hardware and countertop replacement for Bengaluru kitchens, fitted to the carcass you already have.
What Wears Out First in a Modular Kitchen
Hardware fails long before structure does, because hardware is the only part of the kitchen with moving parts. A hinge on a frequently used cupboard opens and closes tens of thousands of times, and a drawer under the hob carries weight through every cooking cycle. In Bengaluru humidity, corrosion at the pivot accelerates all of it.
Hinges
Doors that sit crooked, will not stay closed, or drop at the outer edge. Often the hinge itself, sometimes the board it is screwed into.
Drawer channels
Drawers that jam halfway, tilt when loaded or need lifting to close. Telescopic channels are consumable and are meant to be replaced.
Handles and profiles
Loosening at the fixing, finish wearing through at the grip point, or a profile edge that has started to lift.
Internal accessories
Baskets that have rusted at the weld, carousels that no longer rotate cleanly, and cutlery trays that have cracked.
Countertops
Chips at the sink cut-out, staining around the hob, or a crack that has begun to travel. Usually the last item to fail and the most disruptive to change.
Can You Add Soft Close to an Existing Kitchen?
Usually yes, and it is the single most noticeable upgrade available without changing anything visible. Soft close hinges retrofit onto standard cup hinge boring, which most modular kitchens already have, so the shutters themselves do not need replacing. Drawers are the same story: a soft close channel replaces a standard one within the same drawer box.
The two things that prevent it are boring that does not match a standard pattern, and hinge seats where the board has softened so the new hinge cannot be held securely. Both are visible at the survey.
Worth knowing before you buy. Soft close quality varies more than any other component in a kitchen. The mechanism is what wears, so this is one of the few places where the brand genuinely changes how long the upgrade lasts.
Can a Countertop Be Replaced Without Removing the Cabinets?
Usually yes. The counter sits on the carcass rather than being built into it, so it can be lifted off and a new one set down provided the carcass is sound enough to take the handling and is still level. Plumbing is disconnected and reconnected at the sink, and the backsplash may need making good at the joint.
This is more disruptive than shutter work. There is cutting, there is dust, and the kitchen is genuinely out of use for part of it. We tell you which days those are before you commit.
| Material | Relative cost | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Granite | Entry | Hard wearing, widely available, joins are visible |
| Marble | Mid | Stains and etches with Indian cooking, needs sealing |
| Quartz | Premium | Non porous, consistent pattern, most forgiving in a working kitchen |
Relative bands for the material itself. Fabrication, cut-outs, edge profiling, removal of the old counter and plumbing disconnection are quoted separately, and the whole job is priced per square foot of work done after the survey.
Which Hardware Brand for a Retrofit?
For a retrofit the question is not which brand is best in general. It is which one fits the boring and the carcass you already have, and which one you will still be able to get a spare for in five years. Availability of replacement parts matters more in a renovation than in a new build, because you are already living with the consequence of a component nobody stocks.
What we recommend and why. We specify hardware based on what fits your existing boring, what carries a warranty we can hand to you in writing, and what has a service presence in Bengaluru. If your existing hardware is a good brand and still serviceable, we will tell you to keep it.
What This Job Does Not Include
Being clear about the boundary is part of quoting honestly. Hardware and countertop work assumes the carcass is sound. If the survey shows otherwise, the recommendation changes and so does the price, and we will say so before you commit rather than after.
| Included | Not included |
|---|---|
| Hinges, channels, handles, accessories | Shutter replacement, quoted separately |
| Soft close retrofit where boring permits | New boring in softened board |
| Countertop removal, supply and fitting | Relocating the sink or hob position |
| Plumbing disconnect and reconnect at the sink | New plumbing runs or drainage changes |
| Making good the backsplash at the joint | Full backsplash replacement |
| Debris removal, cleared daily | Carcass repair, which is a different scope |
Hardware and Countertops Bangalore: FAQs
Can I add soft close hinges to my existing kitchen?
Usually yes. Soft close hinges retrofit onto standard cup hinge boring, which most modular kitchens already have, so the shutters do not need replacing. The two things that prevent it are non standard boring and hinge seats where the board has softened.
Why do my kitchen drawers jam?
Almost always worn telescopic channels. Channels are a consumable part with a finite cycle life and are designed to be replaced. Loading beyond their rating and corrosion at the runner in humid conditions both shorten that life.
How much does it cost to replace kitchen hinges?
Hinges are quoted per pair and the labour depends on how many doors are involved and whether the seats need making good. We quote the whole kitchen rather than per hinge so there are no surprises partway through.
Can a countertop be replaced without removing the cabinets?
Usually yes. The counter sits on the carcass rather than being built into it, so it can be lifted off and replaced provided the carcass is sound and still level. Plumbing is disconnected at the sink and the backsplash may need making good at the joint.
Granite or quartz for a Bangalore kitchen?
Quartz is non porous and the most forgiving in a working Indian kitchen, where turmeric, oil and acidic marinades are daily. Granite is hard wearing and cheaper but joins are more visible. Marble stains and etches and generally needs more care than a busy kitchen allows.
Do you replace only the hardware, without any other work?
Yes. Hardware only is a legitimate scope and often the right one. If the shutters are still sound and only the hinges and channels have gone, replacing just those is what we will recommend.
Which hardware brand do you recommend?
The one that fits your existing boring, carries a warranty we can hand you in writing and has a service presence in Bengaluru. Spare part availability matters more in a retrofit than in a new build. If your existing hardware is good and still serviceable, we will say so.
Will replacing the countertop damage my tiling?
The joint where the counter meets the backsplash usually needs making good, and we include that. Full backsplash replacement is a separate scope and we will tell you at the survey if the tiling is likely to need it.
Key Takeaways
- Hardware fails long before structure, because it is the only part of the kitchen with moving parts.
- Soft close retrofits onto most existing cup hinge boring without replacing the shutters.
- Drawer channels are consumable and are designed to be replaced, not repaired indefinitely.
- Countertops sit on the carcass rather than in it, so they can usually be swapped without a rebuild.
- For a retrofit, spare part availability matters more than brand reputation in the abstract.
If the kitchen looks fine but nothing closes properly any more, this is the scope you want. For the shutters as well, see kitchen shutter replacement, and for the full picture start at kitchen renovation in Bangalore.
