New Shutters. On a Box That Still Works.
Refacing replaces everything you see and touch while keeping the structure behind it. In a kitchen where the carcass is sound, it delivers most of the visual change of a new kitchen for a fraction of the disruption, because nothing wet, tiled or plumbed is disturbed.
Most of the change. A fraction of the demolition.

What Modular Kitchen Refacing Actually Is
Refacing replaces the visible and handled parts of a kitchen while retaining the carcass. New shutters, new hinges and channels, new handles, and fresh edge banding on any exposed carcass edges so the retained structure reads as new alongside the new shutters.
What it does not touch is the countertop, the backsplash, the plumbing, the electrical points or the flooring. That is the entire reason it takes days rather than weeks and produces a fraction of the debris.
Refacing is not painting. Painted shutters in a kitchen fail at the edges within a season or two of steam and cleaning. Refacing replaces the shutter itself with a factory-finished component, which is why it lasts.
Reface or Replace? The Honest Test
This is the question the whole decision turns on, and it is decided by the carcass rather than by budget. The test below is what we run at the survey. If your kitchen fails it, refacing is money spent on a problem it cannot solve.
| Reface when | Replace when |
|---|---|
| Base unit bottoms are firm and dry | Base units have swollen or delaminated |
| Hinge screws still bite into solid board | Screws spin in softened material |
| Cabinet openings measure square | Carcasses have racked out of square |
| No active leak under the sink | A leak is still running or recently was |
| The layout works for how you cook | The layout is the actual complaint |
| No termite or borer activity | Live infestation anywhere in the run |
Mixed results are normal and do not rule out refacing. It is common to rebuild the two units nearest the sink and reface the rest of the kitchen.
What Does Refacing Cost in Bangalore?
Refacing costs substantially less than a new modular kitchen because the carcass, countertop, plumbing and tiling are all retained. We price per square foot of the work actually done, measured at the survey. There is no fixed rate per shutter, because the rate itself moves with quantity. Sheet materials come in fixed sizes, so a job needing ten and a half sheets buys eleven, and the offcut is carried by that job rather than the next one. A larger, simpler run therefore prices better per square foot than a small one with many odd sizes.
| Finish | Relative cost | Character |
|---|---|---|
| PVC | Entry | Lowest cost, best suited to utility runs |
| Laminate | Mid | Hard wearing and the usual choice |
| Membrane | Upper mid | Seamless profiled and shaker shutters |
| Acrylic | Premium | High gloss with depth of colour |
| PU | Highest | Matte, custom colour, most design freedom |
Relative bands rather than a price list. Hardware and edge banding are quoted separately, and the figure follows the survey.
What Actually Changes About How It Looks
Refacing is often assumed to be a like for like swap in a different colour. It is not. Because the shutters are remade from scratch, the proportions of the doors, the drawer split, the handle type and the finish can all change, which is most of what makes a kitchen read as new.
Drawer splits can change
A cupboard with a single door below can become a bank of drawers, which is usually the single biggest usability gain available without moving the carcass.
Handle language can change
Moving from surface handles to a J profile or a groove changes the entire read of the kitchen without touching the structure.
Two tone becomes possible
Different finishes above and below the counter, which is difficult to retrofit any other way.
Open shelving can be introduced
Selected units can be opened up, provided the carcass sides are sound enough to be exposed and edge banded.
Kitchen Refacing Bangalore: FAQs
Is kitchen refacing worth it?
It is worth it when the carcass is sound and the shutters have aged, which describes most Bengaluru kitchens between five and fifteen years old. You keep the box, countertop, plumbing and tiling, and replace everything you see and touch. It is not worth it when the structure has failed.
Is it cheaper to reface or replace kitchen cabinets?
Refacing is substantially cheaper, because you are not paying again for the carcass, countertop, plumbing or tiling. The saving is real only if the carcass is genuinely sound. Refacing a failing box means paying twice within a couple of years.
What is the difference between refacing and painting?
Painting coats the existing shutter. Refacing replaces the shutter with a new factory-finished component. In a kitchen exposed to steam and cleaning, paint typically fails at the edges within a season or two, which is why we do not offer it.
Does refacing include the countertop?
No. Refacing covers shutters, hardware and exposed carcass edges. Countertop replacement can be added but is quoted separately, because it changes both the timeline and the amount of dust in your home.
Can I change the kitchen layout while refacing?
Not the layout, since the carcass stays where it is. You can change a great deal else: drawer splits, handle type, finish, two tone treatments and selected open shelving. Changing the layout means rebuilding rather than refacing.
How long does refacing take?
Far less than a rebuild, because components are manufactured off site and there is no demolition or drying time. The kitchen stays usable through most of the job. We commit to a day count in writing after the survey.
Will the new shutters match my existing tall units?
If the tall units are being refaced in the same batch, yes. If you are retaining an existing finish elsewhere, we show you the sample against it at the survey, because laminate batches shift and existing panels have faded.
Can refacing be done during the monsoon?
Yes. There is no wet work, no masonry and no drying time involved, so refacing is one of the few renovation scopes that stays viable through the Bengaluru monsoon.
Key Takeaways
- Refacing replaces everything visible and handled while retaining the carcass, counter, tiling and plumbing.
- The decision is made by the condition of the carcass, not by budget.
- It is not painting. The shutter itself is replaced with a factory-finished component.
- Drawer splits, handle language, two tone and open shelving can all change without moving the carcass.
- No wet work means refacing stays viable through the monsoon.
If the box is sound and the shutters have had it, refacing is usually the right answer, and we will tell you at the survey if it is not. Compare against a full rebuild in our modular kitchen cost guide.
