Renovate the Wardrobe. Keep the Wall of Storage.
A wardrobe is mostly a fixed box with doors on the front. The box rarely fails. The shutters, the sliding tracks, the hinges and the internal fittings do. All of those can be replaced or refinished without taking the wardrobe off the wall.

Can You Replace Only the Wardrobe Shutters?
Yes, in most wardrobes. A wardrobe carcass is protected in a way a kitchen carcass is not. There is no steam, no grease and no water line running through it, so the box commonly outlives the doors by many years. What fails is the shutter: laminate peeling at the edges, hinges sagging under door weight, or sliding doors dragging on a worn track.
If the carcass is square and dry, new shutters can be fitted to it directly. If the carcass is sound but the finish has aged on visible sides, relamination over the existing structure is usually the better value option.
The one thing that decides it. Wardrobe doors are heavy and tall, so everything depends on whether the hinge seats and the top and bottom tracks are still firm. That is the first thing we check and the first thing we will tell you.
What Gets Replaced, and What Stays
The scope is deliberately narrow. Everything on the front and everything you handle is replaced. The structure and the wall fixing stay.
| Replaced | Retained |
|---|---|
| Hinged or sliding shutters | Carcass, shelving and wall fixing |
| Hinges, including a soft close upgrade | Loft units above, where sound |
| Sliding tracks, rollers and guides | Internal partitions in good condition |
| Handles and profiles | Mirror panels, where undamaged |
| Drawer channels and drawer boxes | Flooring and skirting |
| Internal accessories, rods, trays, organisers | Electrical points and lighting circuits |
Relamination of visible carcass faces can be added where the structure is sound but the finish has aged unevenly against new shutters.
Sliding Doors That Jam or Jump the Track
Sliding wardrobes fail in a predictable order, and almost none of it requires a new wardrobe. Rollers wear flat, bottom tracks collect grit, top guides loosen, and the door begins to drag or tilt. Left long enough the door edge takes the load and the panel itself starts to damage.
Worn or flattened rollers
The most common single cause. Rollers are a consumable and are replaceable independently of the door.
Grit in the bottom track
Bengaluru dust builds in the channel and grinds the roller. Cleaning and a track replacement usually restores the glide completely.
Loose top guide
Allows the door to swing at the base and catch. Usually a realignment rather than a replacement.
Damaged door edge
If the panel edge has already broken up from dragging, the door is replaced. The track and carcass normally are not.
Should You Relaminate or Fit New Shutters?
Relamination bonds a new finish onto sound existing panels. It is the right choice when the structure is fine and the surface has aged. It is the wrong choice when the board underneath has softened, because a new surface on a failing panel hides the problem rather than solving it.
| Choose relamination when | Choose replacement when |
|---|---|
| Panels are firm, flat and dry | Panels flex, swell or show delamination |
| The layout still suits how you use it | You need different internal proportions |
| Edges are intact under the old laminate | Edges have already broken up |
| You want a finish change, not a rebuild | Hinge seats no longer hold a screw |
How Long Does a Wardrobe Renovation Take?
Shorter than a kitchen, because there is no plumbing, no counter and no appliance coordination. Shutters are measured, made off site and fitted in a single short window, so the bedroom stays usable throughout. We commit to a day count in writing after the survey, along with which days are the disruptive ones.
Dust is the real disruption in a bedroom. We sheet the room, work one wardrobe at a time and clear debris daily rather than at the end of the job.
Wardrobe Renovation Bangalore: FAQs
Can I change only the wardrobe shutters?
In most wardrobes yes. A wardrobe carcass is not exposed to steam, grease or a water line, so it commonly outlives the doors. If the box is square and dry and the hinge seats still hold, new shutters can be fitted directly to the existing structure.
Is relaminating an old wardrobe worth it?
It is worth it when the panels are firm, flat and dry and you want a finish change rather than a rebuild. It is not worth it when the board has softened or the edges have broken up, because a new surface over a failing panel hides the problem instead of fixing it.
Why do my sliding wardrobe doors jam?
Almost always worn rollers or grit packed into the bottom track. Both are replaceable independently of the doors. Loose top guides are the next most common cause and are usually a realignment rather than a replacement.
Can you add soft close to an existing wardrobe?
Usually yes, provided the hinge seats are firm. Soft close hinges retrofit onto most standard cup hinge boring, so the doors do not need to be replaced to get the upgrade.
Do you replace wardrobe internals like rods and organisers?
Yes. Rods, trays, pull-outs, tie and belt organisers and drawer boxes can all be retrofitted into an existing carcass, and this is often the change that makes the biggest daily difference.
How long does wardrobe renovation take?
Shorter than a kitchen, because there is no plumbing, counter or appliance coordination involved. Shutters are made off site and fitted in one window, so the bedroom stays usable. We give a day count in writing after the survey.
What warranty do you give?
We warranty the shutters, hardware and workmanship we supply. We do not warranty the existing carcass we retain, and we state that plainly rather than leaving it vague.
Can you match new shutters to another wardrobe in the same room?
Often, but not always exactly. Laminate batches shift over time and existing panels have faded. We show you the sample against your existing finish at the survey so you can decide before ordering.
Key Takeaways
- A wardrobe carcass is not exposed to steam or water, so it usually outlives the doors by years.
- Shutters, hinges, sliding tracks, rollers and internals are all replaceable without removing the wardrobe.
- Sliding doors nearly always fail at the roller or the track, not at the wardrobe.
- Relamination suits sound panels with an aged finish. It does not fix softened board.
- We warranty what we supply and say plainly that we do not warranty the retained carcass.
If the wardrobe still holds everything you own but no longer looks like it belongs in the room, start with a survey. For finish options see our wardrobe cost guide for Bangalore.
